PECULIAR BREWERIES OF THE WORLD

PECULIAR BREWERIES OF THE WORLD

The oldest brewery in the world

The oldest brewery in the world with continuous operations is Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan (Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan). It’s located at the site of the Benedictine monastery Weihenstephan Abbey (now part of district of Freising) since at least 1040 (earliest documentation of the brewery). According to records, hops have been grown in the area since 768, but the brewing has not been mentioned in those. Definitely worthy of a bucket list!

The northernmost brewery in the world

The northernmost brewery in the world is the Svalbard Bryggeri AS, in Longyearbyen at the island of Spitsbergen, in the archipelago of Svalbard, Norway. It’s 860 miles south from the North Pole. They started in 2015 and took over the title from another Norwegian brewery. The law had to be changed first – it was prohibited to commercially produce alcoholic beverages in Svalbard. The water used for brewing partially (16%) comes from thawed ice of a 2,000 year old glacier, and they produce a lineup of 8 beers along with some seasonal ones.

The world’s southernmost brewery

The world’s southernmost brewery title that belongs to the city of Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, particularly to Cerveza Cape Horn, a subsidiary of Cerveza Beagle from the same city. Like their northernmost counterparts Svalbard Bryggeri AS we talked about last time, these guys also use glacier water for their beer! Cheers to taking the art of brewing so far to the south!

The brewery at the highest elevation

The search for peculiar breweries takes us to two locations. The title for the brewery at the highest elevation goes to Lhasa Brewery Company in Lhasa, Tibet, sitting at the altitude of 3,656 m (11,995 feet). However, since the second location is sitting at 3640 m (11,942 feet) and is actually a very cool place it very well deserves to be mentioned here. We’re talking about The Adventure Brew Hostel in La Paz, Bolivia, where you don’t only go for a pint but can actually stay over.
